When the Europeans started settling in this vast region, they did everything they could to erase the rich cultures that were there. This is an unfortunate tragedy that can never be undone. However, you can make sure that your students understand it so that it might never happen again.

It might be discouraging to hear all about the hardships that these people have had to go through. However, it can be nice to know that many aspects of this people's way of life have endured. This is largely due to their oral way of keeping track of things.

Traditionally speaking, the reason why this is such a popular time of year to hear stories from the elders is because that's when people are usually gathered around the fire. It is usually too cold to do much else.

Students might find this method of teaching monotonous and boring, so it's important to find ways to keep it interesting. As long as you'll do that, you should have no trouble instilling these important lessons.
